About Abstract Wood Sculptures
Each of these intriguing pieces of abstract art were sculptured by
a completely natural process which has created their unique shape
and form. It's fascinating characteristics result from surviving
the relentless drought environment of Arizona's high plateaus of
Yavapai County, called the chaparral.
So, each species of tree of the chaparral's "Wonder Woods" -
grows only as it is capable of surviving, - not just lack of
adequate nutrients like moisture, but - it also has to put up with
worms and bugs and insects and vine-like parasites of every
description... not to mention other species competing for the same
'turf' in which to reproduce itself! The great WONDER is how
any of these trees ever makes it to maturity, let alone to be
alive for hundreds of years!
Then comes the most intriguing of all "Wonders" as I wander
through the woods, I spot this little scrap of deadwood... - might
still be attached to a growing tree, or, even more amazing - if
the tree has crashed to the ground - with its dead trunk wasting
away - here's where the Wonder-wood lies waiting for the eye
of the artisan to reclaim, - to recover, - even RECREATE, a hidden
beauty that lies within!
And, then as I hold and turn it in my hand, I have the greatest
WONDER, when I ponder what kind of story this insignificant &
lifeless piece of wood - wants me to recapture, - as with pure
delight, it gives imagination permission to collaborate with the
whole creation; to cut and scrape and carve and embellish it's
innate potential to live again as a sculptured - abstract Work of
Art!
