Wonder Woods of Arizona
 |
Mountain
Mahogany - A shrub or small deciduous tree that grows in
various chaparral areas of the Northwest, Southwest and Central
arees of the US. It can grow to be 12 ft. (4 m.) tall. The bark is
grayish, scaly, and checkered. The twigs of this tree are rigged
and the lateral twigs often spur-like, bright red -brown, and at
first hairy, finally ashen or reddish gray and smooth. It's crown
grows very wide, and it is a skinny wiry tree. |
Velvet
Mesquite - Grows to 30' in height. It has yellow-green leaves
and blooms in April and often again in August. Its greenish-yellow
flowers are followed by slender, brownish seed pods. Grows at
elevations under 5,000' usually along washes or areas where the
water table is high. Its roots can penetrate the ground up to 60'
in search of water. |
Cholla
- (pronounced CHOY-yah) A small, spiny, leafless tree or bush with
cylindrical, jointed branches, the deep, reddish-lavender flowers
blooming near ends. Once the flesh has weathered away, their woody
stems are hollow, with many holes, and are popular souvenirs. |
Juniper
- Tree with short, upright trunk, low, spreading branches, and
rounded or conical, open crown. Habitat includes dry plains,
plateaus, hills, and mountains, mostly on rocky soils; often in
pure stands or with pinyons. Scattered tufts of yellowish twigs
with whitish berries found on the trees are a parasitic mistletoe,
which is characteristic of this tree. |
Manzanita
- Large evergreen shrub, sometimes a small tree commonly branching
near base, with stout, crooked, twisted trunks and branches and
dense, rounded crown as broad as high. Grows up to 20' or more in
dry slopes and in mountain canyons, chaparral, foothill and oak
woodlands, and in Ponderosa Pine forests. The handsome
reddish-brown branches become twisted into odd shapes which are
trimmed into collectors' items called "mountain
driftwood." |
Algerita
- This evergreen shrub grows to 8' with blue-green holly-like
foliage that make good wildlife habitats. It is very tolerant to
drought. Birds enjoy the clusters of small yellow flowers in
spring. The red berries in fall are great for making jelly. These
shrubs grow naturally in Arizona, the southern part of New Mexico
and into Texas. |
